Above is the carcass of a bison. How it died, I do not know. I do know that Terry, Katie and I sat upon a hill across the way waiting for wolves to show. We arrived at the kill spot at about 6:30am and sat for three hours before NPS decided that it was too close to the road. When the sun came up that morning, it hit the top of the hill behind the carcass and moments later the wolves that had been seen the previous night gave out a long howl before they silenced themselves and moved away from the carcass.
After the bison carcass we found a couple herds of bison making their way past Floating Island Lake. A couple bison decided to venture off on a different side of the lake and this guy happened to have a pick or an itch.
The day was filled with many animal sightings and some sack lunches but no wolves. After passing Elk Creek heading back to Mammoth, we stopped at a pullout for one last photo of this sunset.
We stopped by the Slough Creek campground and Katie spotted this eagle from quite a distance. We pulled over and I walked over taking pictures every time I got closer. I was pretty far away but was on top of a hill when I noticed a mother duck with some ducklings. I have heard stories about eagles eating ducks so I was hoping for a great action shot but it flew right over them and disappeared in the air.
What, no picture of the ducks!
ReplyDeleteI added the picture just for you!
ReplyDeleteI like the sun coming through the hair on top of the bison. Are the ducks mallards?
