I made it all the way out to Lamar Valley and didn't see anything until Hitch and Post. Hitch and Post is a trail head for horseback rides and hikers and I have yet to do journey on the trail; perhaps this summer. Any who, I happened to see a mangy coyote. It was sitting in peace looking at a carcass that was visited much earlier by two wolves; a black and gray wolf. Well, this one smart tourist decided that it would make a great difference in whatever she was doing to approach said coyote. Myself and others were viewing the coyote from the road about 200 yards away and she thought that 100 yards would be a better view. So she walked down to the bridge 100 yards from the coyote and started looking east and not at the coyote. The coyote got up and ran further away making these two pictures below the best I have in store for you from this journey.
I made my way over to Soda Butte and got a little closer to a carcass that was a few days old and the only thing pecking at it were magpies and ravens. Apparently two ravens had a little argument and decided to fight about it while flying and I captured that fun activity.
After one raven lost the argument it decided to fly over my head and land on top of Soda Butte fountain. "Soda Butte is a travertine, (calcium carbonate) mount that was formed more than a century ago by a hot spring. Small amounts of hydrothermal water and hydrogen sulfide gas currently flow from it"-information on a board in front of Soda Butte. I captured two nice pictures of the raven looking at the carcass from a distance.
Love the raven pics and coyote pics and the buffalo pic. Is raising its tail really the only clue before it charges?! Still waiting to hear how you were within 15 feet of a coyote...
ReplyDeleteTo baychick: If you get close, the tail will raise. Another sign is bucking of the head but typically the tail will be raised before the head movement. "Anonymous" thank you, perhaps you are "the shit" for reading! Thanks for the comments!
