Work and the Arctic Snap

The past two weeks have been filled with a lot of shifts. The past two weekends I have had; were very cold. Yesterday's walk to breakfast was a chilly -34 Fahrenheit. I tried to go to Chico Hot Springs last weekend but Matilda didn't feel like starting and my friend Bob had picked up a shift to help out. My Saturday last week was spent running the wheel on the cook's line which brought back some memories from previous seasons.

I had my interview a long time ago and went back twice to talk with the hiring managers. They had a lot to say about a couple of things but the short version of the whole thing is that they don't want to set me up for failure...or set me up for minor success. They feel that even though I have a background in management, that I need to work a little more in the dining room to gain, "an eye for detail". For a day or two I was upset about the rejection of the position but now I hold my head high and look for the positive parts for the summer. Oh, I should mention that I will be a server at Mammoth Hot Springs for the Summer of 2014. I am looking forward to my days off like everyone else and will shortly start to plan some goals for the summer. Having Matilda will make the goals a lot more easy to accomplish.

In closing, I am excited for the summer and I hope it warms up. The photos I have posted this season, to my opinion, are far greater than those of the previous winter season. Hopefully it will warm up soon and I can get back out there. Thanks for checking in constantly and hopefully more stories will come soon.

P.S.
The air around Mammoth was frozen. White hazes of what looked like smoke surrounded the Mammoth area and by looking out the window, everyone knew that it was too cold. Thirty seconds of standing outside resulted in the mustache freezing. The four minute walk to work resulted in shivering at the table in the EDR for roughly 5-10 minutes. The steam from the springs were thick and linger like a smoky cloud above Denver on April 20th. The bison were white in color and the sidewalks would be cleared by leaf blowers. The official temperature of Lamar Valley on 2/6/2014 was -48 Fahrenheit. If I were to use Facebook like many others, my status would have been, "It's cold outside".

  2. To everything there is a season. At least you will remain in your favorite place for another year! - 48? Mammoth is not going to be my 'winter vacation spot!' Glad you're finding time to blog!
